Energy drinks (or energy drinks that contain stimulants such as caffeine, taurine and various substances such as carbohydrates (sugars), vitamins, minerals, and flavoring and fruit juice and glucuronolactone (a natural substance that is created in the body from the breakdown of the simple sugar glucose) ) usually the consumer gets a lot of energy after consuming these drinks. A can of energy drink usually has 80 mg of caffeine. These drinks are made to increase the energy level of the consumer

History of energy drink consumption

Energy drinks are the active sub-group of primary soft drinks industry. Originally, Pepsi was marketed as an energy booster. The term Coca-Cola is derived from two active ingredients such as coca leaf and kola nut, both of which are stimulants. In 1904, it was replaced by fresh cocoa leaves due to concerns about the use of cocaine in food products.

In 1929, Lucozade Energy was produced in England to help the body recover. In the early 1980s, this substance was known as an energy drink to supply lost energy. The origin of this drink dates back to 1949, when William Mark Swartz, a Chicago businessman, produced vitamin-filled soft drinks as an alternative to sugary drinks that have zero calories. He created an energy-boosting drink containing caffeine, B vitamins and cane sugar, and partnered with Charles Gordon of Tri-City Beverage to produce and distribute the drink.

Since 2002, the trend of packaging energy drinks in larger cans has increased. In Canada and the United States, the maximum amount of caffeine per serving in energy drinks was limited. Manufacturers increased the amount of caffeine by adding more servings per container and increasing the size of the containers.

In 2004, Shot Energy, a branch of energy drinks, was launched in the United States with 5-hour energy production. Energy powders or effervescent tablets were produced in 2007 to produce an energy drink by adding it to water and are still being produced and marketed despite the restrictions imposed.

Energy drink ingredients

Hub energy drinks contain ingredients that are marketed to increase energy and mental performance. Most energy drinks contain caffeine to stimulate brain function and increase alertness and concentration. However, the amount of caffeine in each product varies.

Energy drinks usually contain several other ingredients as well, the most common of which include:

Sugar is usually the main source of calories in these drinks, although some contain no sugar and are low in carbohydrates.

B vitamins: They play an important role in converting the food you eat into energy used by your body.

Amino acid derivatives: for example, taurine and L-carnitine. Both are produced naturally by the body and are involved in several biological processes.

Herbal extracts: Guarana is probably used to add more caffeine, while ginseng may have positive effects on brain function.

Based on the ingredients, the price of energy drink is also different. It is said that the best energy drink is Hype, and Iranian energy drink is also available in the market, which usually has a lower price.

Benefits of energy drinks

The first benefit of energy drink is that it creates a sense of alertness, wakefulness and productivity. These drinks contain a standard amount of caffeine per can, and in most cases, consumers know exactly how much caffeine they are getting, which is helpful for those trying to control their caffeine intake. The standard energy drink is actually the same amount of caffeine.

Since these drinks are served cold, they can be consumed much faster than coffee, which is usually only drunk hot. Faster consumption results in faster caffeine entry into the bloodstream.

The flavor of coffee and tea is not for everyone, so energy drinks are useful for people who want a caffeine boost but don’t like coffee or tea. Energy drinks have different flavors and options.

In addition to caffeine, these drinks often contain other energy-generating substances such as taurine, B vitamins, ginseng and glucuronolactone. These compounds are believed to enhance the effects of caffeine.

Since most energy drinks are served cold and carbonated, they have a refreshing effect on the consumer. For many, this makes them more appealing than other caffeinated beverages, which are usually consumed warm with a dairy product.

In addition, it is not necessary to brew energy drinks, which makes them a fast caffeine delivery product.

Energy drinks provide a way to recover quickly after exercise due to the presence of caffeine and carbohydrates. Many athletes prefer a cold, light drink after exercise compared to a hot drink or milk.

While black coffee has zero calories, but few people drink black coffee and most people enhance its taste with sugar, milk, cream or even butter. There are many low-calorie energy drinks available that deliver caffeine without the calories and sugar.

Harms and side effects of energy drinks

Energy drinks contain a lot of caffeine and sugar and are usually high in sugar. Almost every can contains 8-10 teaspoons of sugar!  While this sugar in combination with caffeine increases your blood sugar level and causes an initial burst of energy, but later you will face a sudden drop in blood sugar level, which will make you feel tired and lethargic again.

Energy drinks are not good for exercise. They cause dehydration and give you less energy to exercise.

According to Islam, it is permissible to consume energy drinks if they are not made from impure substances, are not intoxicating, and do not threaten the health of the body. Energy drink can be hot or cold based on the ingredients used in it.

Are energy drinks harmful for children?

It is estimated that 31% of children aged 12-17 regularly consume energy drinks. However, according to recommendations published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2011, energy drinks should not be consumed by children or adolescents.

Their argument is that the caffeine in energy drinks puts children and teenagers at risk of dependence or addiction to this substance and may also have negative effects on the developing heart and brain.

Experts have also set caffeine limits for these ages and recommend that teenagers consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine per day and children no more than 1.14 mg of caffeine per pound (2.5 mg/kg). Consume from your body weight per day.

When should we drink energy drinks?

According to the biological cycles of the human body and the effects of caffeine on them, consumption of energy drinks in the middle of the morning between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM will be most beneficial and will make you find significant energy in doing your daily tasks. .

If you have a lot of work to do after eating lunch, you can consume an energy drink between 1:30 and 3:30 to get rid of the feeling of decreased body activity.

Before exercise, consuming an energy drink is a healthy and enjoyable choice that increases your body’s ability during physical activities.
