Classic Mojito (Base)

How to make different types of mojitos, and the ingredients needed to combine delicious and festive colors and flavors

This is the original and traditional Cuban Mojito recipe.

Ingredients for 1 glass:

  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves

  • 1 tablespoon of white sugar (or ½ oz simple syrup)

  • ½ fresh lime (cut into small wedges)

  • 2 oz (60 ml) white rum (such as Havana Club)

  • Crushed ice

  • Soda Water (Club Soda)

Instructions:

  1. In a tall glass (Highball), place the mint leaves, sugar, and lime wedges.

  2. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently muddle the ingredients. The goal is to release the mint’s aroma and the lime juice, not to shred the mint completely as it can become bitter.

  3. Add the rum to the glass.

  4. Fill the glass to the top with crushed ice.

  5. Top up with soda water and stir gently to mix everything together.

  6. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a lime wheel. Serve immediately.

Various Mojito Flavors

By keeping the main base (mint, lime, rum, soda water), you can create new and exciting flavors by substituting or adding one or two ingredients.

1. Strawberry Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: 4-5 fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced.

  • Instructions: Muddle the sliced strawberries together with the mint, sugar, and lime. This gives a beautiful red color and a fantastic flavor. Then continue with the normal steps.

2. Pineapple Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: 3-4 cubes of fresh pineapple.

  • Instructions: Muddle the pineapple cubes with the mint and sugar. The tropical flavor and natural sweetness of the pineapple are perfect.

3. Coconut Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: 1 oz (30 ml) coconut milk, or substitute the rum with coconut rum (like Malibu).

  • Instructions: After muddling the mint and lime, add the coconut rum and the white rum. This combination gives a creamy texture and a tropical taste.

4. Mango Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: ¼ to ½ of a ripe mango, chopped.

  • Instructions: Muddle the mango with the mint and sugar. This drink is very sweet, fruity, and has a vibrant yellow color.

5. Raspberry & Basil Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: A handful of fresh or frozen raspberries + 5-6 fresh basil leaves.

  • Instructions: Muddle the raspberries and basil leaves instead of, or along with, the mint. Basil gives a different and wonderful aroma to the drink.

6. Watermelon Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: ½ cup of seedless watermelon, cubed.

  • Instructions: Muddle the watermelon with the mint and sugar. This drink is ideal for hot summer days and is incredibly refreshing.

7. Cucumber Mojito

  • Additional Ingredients: 4-5 thin slices of cucumber.

  • Instructions: Muddle the cucumber slices with the mint and lime. The cucumber adds a unique freshness and crispness to the drink.

8. Virgin Mojito (Non-Alcoholic)

  • Additional Ingredients: Omit the rum.

  • Instructions: Follow the classic method, but instead of adding rum and soda water, use only soda water. A fantastic drink for everyone, including children.

Key Tips for Making a Perfect Mojito

  • Always use fresh ingredients. Fresh mint and lime are the heart and soul of a Mojito.

  • Don’t over-muddle. You only need to release the aromas; over-muddling makes it bitter.

  • Use crushed ice. Smaller ice chips cool the drink better and mix more easily with the other ingredients.

  • You can substitute sugar with simple syrup. Simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until dissolved and then cooled) mixes more easily in a cold drink.

  • Be creative with new flavors: Use seasonal fruits like peach, blackberry, or even kiwi. Adding a drop of rosewater or a splash of pomegranate juice can also be interesting.

With these recipes, you can make a variety of amazing Mojitos at home based on your taste and the fruits you have available. Enjoy!
